Introduction
DocsKit Free is the open-source docs engine behind DocsKit - a production-ready Next.js documentation template. This is the free, MIT-licensed core: the docs layout, MDX rendering, and the component set. It's genuinely usable as-is, not a crippled trial.
What problem does it solve?
Most documentation tooling forces you into one of two bad positions: use a heavyweight platform with limited customization (Gitbook, Confluence), or spend two weeks hand-rolling a docs site before you can write a single word of actual documentation.
DocsKit Free gets you a working docs site on day one - a sidebar, a table of contents, MDX with real components, dark and light mode - and because it's plain Next.js, you can customize every pixel without fighting a framework.
What's in the free version
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| MDX content | Write in Markdown with React components embedded anywhere |
Callout, CodeBlock, Steps, Tabs | The full MDX component set, not a subset |
| Responsive layout | Left sidebar navigation + right-side table of contents |
| Dark + light mode | No flash on load |
| Static export | Deploys to Vercel, Netlify, Cloudflare Pages, or any host |
| TypeScript config | Type-safe nav configuration - no YAML or JSON to manage |
What's Pro-only
DocsKit Pro ($39, one-time) adds the parts that take real time to build well:
- Syntax highlighting - Shiki-based, 100+ languages, filename tabs. Code blocks here render plain.
- Full-text search - Pagefind, indexed at build time, zero server cost.
- A marketing homepage - hero, features, pricing, FAQ, ready to customize.
- Configuration and API reference docs - the deeper reference content.
- Ongoing updates.
Comparing the two repos side by side is the fastest way to see exactly what Pro adds - this fork is deliberately not obfuscated.

At build time, Next.js reads every MDX file in content/docs/, compiles it with next-mdx-remote, and emits a static HTML page.
